Sri Lankan Independence Day Celebrations
February 9 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm UTC+0
Sri Lanka will be celebrating the 76th Independence Day on 4th February 2024 and in line with this, SLAFA is planning to hold a ceremony to mark the occasion on 9th February 2024 at the Parliament House from 5.30 pm to 7.00 pm. The event will be hosted by the Minister of Multicultural Affairs, Hon. Ngaree Ah Kit and it is a great opportunity for the Sri Lankan community to come together to celebrate the 76th Independence Day of Sri Lanka.
We do cultural performances in this ceremony and other formalities. People are requested to RSVP to SLAFA email and encouraged to wear their traditional Srilankan cloths or smart casuals to this event.
Further to the above celebration, we also plan to recognize Sri Lankan senior citizens (who are older than 60years) who lived in the Territory and rendered a valuable service to the community. The members of SLAFA are given the opportunity to nominate the senior citizens to be awarded. This will be the first time in SLAFA history to award senior citizens on the Independence Day celebrations.
Also as part of the Independence Day celebrations , we are hosting an art exhibition at the Leanyer Buddhist Temple from 10 am -12 Noon. Members of any age are invited to draw or create anything they want and we will include it at the Art Exhibition for everyone to see! We welcome all to present their creations (drawings, paintings, sculptures, etc) before the 4th of February to either the Leanyer temple or to one of the following committee members: Lakkhi Jayasooriya (0458319146) or Nirmala Godavitharana (0405758659) .Awards will be given for two age categories: under 12 years and 12 and above.
