April 2024 marked another memorable Sinhala and Tamil New Year, brought to life by the vibrant and enthusiastic community at the Sri Lankan Australian Friendship Association (SLAFA). Our much-anticipated Avurudu New Year Games were not just games, but a splendid showcase of our rich cultural tapestry and communal spirit.
The St John’s Catholic College grounds buzzed with excitement and the laughter of approximately 300 attendees, from the start of the event at 3 PM until the close at 11:40 PM. The air was filled with the delightful aromas of traditional dishes, and our food stalls, including the beloved Ammas Cafe and Ceylonthra, ensured there was a generous spread of culinary delights available right until the end.
We were graced with unexpected guests, including prominent figures from the educational and political spheres, who brought additional cheer to our celebrations. The games, the heart of the event, proceeded seamlessly, thanks to our dedicated officials.
A special moment of the day was the recognition given to our young performers, who received certificates and chocolates for their cultural dance presentations. Their performances were not only entertaining but vital for the preservation of our cultural heritage.
The Donate Life stall added a meaningful layer to our gathering, underscoring the importance of community support and life-giving initiatives.
We are not done yet! Together, we make these events possible and continue to weave the fabric of our strong and caring community.
Let’s carry this spirit forward, and we look forward to seeing you all again next year, for an even brighter and safer celebration.
Thank you,
SLAFA Community
